Louis van Gaal has once again started rumours of an upcoming offer for Cristiano Ronaldo after he suggested that the former Manchester United winger could return to the club in this transfer window. Ronaldo has been linked with a return to Old Trafford quite heavily in the last 12 months. Even though the rumours have died down at the start of this transfer window, Van Gaal has given them a new lease of life. This may be largely down to United searching for a top-class winger after going on the verge of losing Angel di Maria to Paris St Germain.

The Argentine winger is expected to join the French club in the next few days and this move comes just two months after he came to Old Trafford for £ 60 million. Ronaldo enjoyed an immensely successful time at United. Even though it was not as productive in terms of personal statistics, Ronaldo won numerous titles with the Premier League club. He has always stated that he would one day like to return to United. The Red Devils have a vast amount of money to spend as shown by the £ 150 million net spend in the last summer transfer window.

A similar outlay in this transfer window will not be surprising. “He may come. But it is not possible. Yeah, of course. But that’s not possible. Why not? Because you have the club, Ronaldo and then you have Manchester United and how much Manchester United want to spend,” said Van Gaal. However, Madrid would not want to sell their star asset on a cheap even though he is entering into the final best years of his career. Despite turning 30, it is expected that Ronaldo will cost in excess of £ 50 million. He was sold to Madrid for £ 80 million in 2009.
